Set your READING goals

New Year new set of goals. What have you promised yourself this year? Many including myself will be trying to lose weight, start a business or read more books. Surprisingly, the goal of reading more books is like any goal that you set. Beyond being SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely) all goals have hidden gems that can help you reach the desired result. Below are three lessons I have learned to help my goal shine like GOLD.

Don’t Compare

It is easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to another person on a similar journey. When I cut my hair and grow my natural texture I fell deep into this trap. I thought and wanted Tracy Ellis Ross’ hair. I compared my hair to hers constantly and put her on my vision board. Later I found out that my 4C hair will never look like her in the morning, I will never wash and go. If your goal is to read 50 books this year do not compare your numbers or time to another person. You may not that the same schedule or interest.

Start Small

Instead of trying to read 100 books this year break your reading goal into smaller chunks. Think of your time in the terms of weeks or months. Set a weekly reading goal or a monthly goal. You will find that accomplishing these small goals will help build momentum to accomplish the larger task.

Tell A Friend

I have found that having someone to hold you accountable is motivating. Tell someone you trust or admire your goal. Scheduling time to meet and talk about your accomplishments is another great way to motivate and help you accomplish your goal.
