Meet the Author: D.A. Bourne

Friends I had the pleasure of chatting with best-selling author D.A. Bourne. His book Don’t Push Me is a MUST read and I hear there is a sequel coming soon. D.A will also be one of the many authors at this year’s Christian Book Lover’s Retreat in Charlotte, NC October 27-31. I hope you enjoy this chat in our series of Meet The Author.

It’s about a group of autoworkers and their loved ones that go through racial conflict during 2020, the year the pandemic begins. It was inspired by the social justice movement that took place after George Floyd’s death. The goal of this book/series is to show how God loves justice and hates racism. The story deals with systemic racism, mental health, and more.

Why did you choose to become a Christian Fiction Author?

I’m a big fan of TV drama series. Some of the best writers are doing TV shows in my opinion. I’ve always wanted to bring that element of drama but incorporate Christ in the story. I’m not one to preach to my readers, however, I would rather have Christian themes in the plot so that the reader can make their own spiritual decisions. My target audience is always the unbeliever first; however, many times it’s the Christian readers that create more sales.

What is your writing process? (Do you write at a certain time, a certain place, use a notebook first?)

I don’t have a set time for writing because I have a full-time job and a family of six. Lately, I do most of my writing during my lunch break at work or when there is downtime at work or home. My first draft is done with a notebook because I can take it anywhere and I don’t need a battery or electricity. The 2nd draft is completed through the laptop, followed by sending the draft to the editor, fixing their corrections, formatting the draft, and sending it to the publisher.

What is the best part of being an author?

Bringing your imagination and vision to fruition. I love it when readers can finally enjoy the plot and characters that have been in my mind for soooooo long. One of the greatest joys is discussing my books with readers and getting their feedback. I look forward to the day that I can write as a full-time occupation.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Wow, there are several that come to mind. The late Eric Jerome Dickey inspired me to write drama because of his dynamic style of writing in 1st person. In my genre, I would say, Khara Campbell, H.H. Fowler, Tanisha Stewart, and Lakisha Johnson are at the top of my list. I’m a fan of your books as well!

What book(s) are you most excited to read next?

Currently, I don’t have any books that I’m anticipating. I usually support my favorite authors, but if I see a book by an author that I’ve never read, I will download it if the plot grabs my attention.

Tell me something about you as a person. (Likes, hobbies, family anything you would like readers to know.)

I currently live in Toronto, one of the few authors in Canada that writes Black Christian Fiction. I really enjoy watching football, basketball, and listening to house music. For the most part, I’m laid-back and enjoying quality time with my wife and family. Having an opportunity to travel multiple times a year is one of my goals, through business or pleasure.

 What is next?

The amazing sequel to Don’t Push Me is next, expected to be released this summer (date TBD). The title is Bring The Noise and following this release will be a couple of spinoffs.
