3 Myths about Christian Fiction

When readers hear “it’s Christian Fiction” their mind often fills with mistruths about the genre. Questions such as, is it like church, is it boring or is it Bible retellings are asked. There are many myths about the genre and the authors that pen the stories. Here are three myths about Christian Fiction and the truth that readers need to know.

Myth 1 about Christian Fiction: It’s preachy

Yes, the theme or solution may have a spiritual lesson but the books are far from preachy. These are stories, not sermons. Yes, the story may contain a message but all stories have a lesson-learned theme, or moral. Characters may or may not be Christians and the settings are not always the church.  Christian fiction is not limited nor is it preachy.

Myth 2 about Christian Fiction: There is no variety

Readers rarely stick to reading only one genre. Avid readers like to read a range of books and that range can be found in Christian Fiction. Like ice cream, Christian Fiction comes in many flavors. If a reader would like to read a genre with Christian flare they need only to type Christian in the front of the search. For example Christian Thrillers, Christian Romances, or Christian Women’s fiction. As one reader said, “it’s drama in Jesus’ name.”

Myth 3 about Christian Fiction: It is or will be boring

There are many subgenres within Christian Fiction. Based on the number of choices a reader will never have to worry that it is boring. Each reader is different as are authors if the book doesn’t fit the reader that is, not a sign of a bad book. When readers DNF (did not finish) stories that is a sign that the reader needs another story. The story, author, and reader share a complex relationship. When the matches are good it is great and when they aren’t it is time for something else. Christian Fiction is many things but it is not dull.

Christian Fiction is many things but it is not preachy, not boring, and doesn’t lack variety. Make your next book Christian Fiction.
