Do you find yourself in front of a screen often? Lol, you are probably saying well duh I am reading this blog post, aren’t I. You are reading this blog post about swapping screen time for reading time – and I thank you. It is greatly appreciated now, let’s explore ways to swap screen time for reading time AFTER you finish this article.
Swap Screen time for Reading time by setting a timer
This may sound too good to be true but it is a proven way to build a reading habit. Our days are packed with work, family, and other responsibilities. It is common to get lost in the task of the day and forget that we need time to recharge. Setting a timer on a watch, or phone or with the help of Alexa is a great way to select designated time out of your day to read. Please don’t feel pressured to set the timer for 30 minutes. Set a timer for 5-10-possible 15 minutes and build up your reading time.
Swap Screen Time for reading time by setting a routine bedtime /breakfast time
I love a good Routine or system for completing tasks. Routines when carried out consistently allow our brains to relax. Over time the Routine becomes a habit and we begin to function on autopilot. Create a day or night Routine where you take a few moments to read. You can read on your morning commute if you use public transportation or at breakfast. In the evening instead of watching television or scrolling on your phone, use that time to read. Studies have stated that absorbing light from your phone tablet or television disturbed sleep patterns. If you don’t believe the Science, for centuries parents have read their children bedtime stories to help them sleep. Bedtime stories still work, friend.
Swap Screen Time for reading time by using commercial time
This may seem like unconventional advice but it is how I turned a group of reluctant readers into avid readers. Select your read material of choice and read during the commercial break of the show or sporting event that you are watching. If you are binge-watching read in between episodes for a set amount of time.(see first suggestion) The reluctant readers reported that over time they began to read beyond the length of the commercial. Some stated that they decided to watch the program after they finished their reading selection.
I hope that you can use one or more of these suggestions to help you swap screen time for reading time. If you are looking for your next read I have a few suggestions below.
