Developing a writing routine is a game-changer for new and established authors. Authors have said their routine is the number one reason they maintain a high volume of productivity. The difficult part of establishing a writing routine is understanding that there is no silver bullet. A writing routine is unique to each individual. No one can tell you exactly what you need to do to have a successful routine. Although I can build your writing routine, I can share some three key elements you should examine to create a writing routine that boosts your productivity.
Determine Your Ideal Writing Time
5 am writing is a trend that many writers follow. For some, writing in the morning is the cornerstone of the process. Authors with small children or day jobs may find that afternoon is ideal for writing. Writing during a lunch break or while kids are napping are methods that have been proven to be effective. For a number of writers including myself, nighttime is when words flow effortlessly. To find your ideal writing I would suggest tracking your word count during each time of the day. I found that when the sun is up, I can write a blog post and take care of administrative tasks but not craft fiction.
Method of Writing
Now that you have determined your ideal time to create you need to select a method of writing. You can and should test writing on a desktop, laptop, with a pen, or on your phone. Writing with programs such as Google Docs gives you the flexibility to write on multiple devices.
Location Location Location
Where you will write is just as important as what you use and what time you write. Determining your ideal location is done through trail and error. If you like the sound of a crowded café but are in quarantine, there are YouTube videos that provide café sounds.
If you can determine your ideal writing time location and method, you will have the foundation needed to create a writing routine. Do you have a writing routine or ritual? We would love to hear your suggestion for developing a writing routine, please share your thoughts in the comment section.
