How to read nonfiction and love it

Fiction reading is the primary theme in blogs however nonfiction reading is just as satisfying as fiction. Recently I have picked up several nonfiction books, that have propelled my thought process and knowledge. Often I read nonfiction in physical books because I love annotating however I have discovered that you can annotate on the Kindle. The nonfiction sections of my bookshelves are growing and I have some tips to help you get the most out of your nonfiction reading.

Select topics that interest you

You are read because you want to READ. Reading a topic you are interested in is key when diving into nonfiction. Pick a topic that interests you or one that you are passionate about. There are books on just about anything you want to learn. From self-help, and religion to food and productivity, you have the power to pick a book that will engage your curiosity. Once you have selected your book it is time to make the knowledge stick

Write in the book

Annotating books is the process of highlighting, underlining, writing, and engaging with the text. If you are reading a physical book you can annotate by highlighting key information or jotting notes in the book or on sticky notes. If you are reading an ebook, like the Kindle, you can highlight and note with your device. After you have completed the ebook kindle allows you to export your notes to your Amazon email address. The process of annoying helps with retention of the knowledge and allows you to experience the text on another level. If writing in your book isn’t your thing you can keep a journal.

Summarize or keep a journal

Keeping a reading journal or commonplace book is a practice that dates back as far as the 1800s. After reading or during if you prefer, you can note your findings in a journal dedicated to your reading. Your journal pages do not have to be limited to summaries and quotes. You can include a TBR list, books and pages read, trackers, reviews, and any additional bookish content. Previously I have kept pictures of the books that I have read along with my ratings.

What nonfiction books are you reading?

Are you in the mood for a quick read?

Sometimes we want to read a good story but we only have a short amount of free time. That is one of the reasons I wrote the Living a Blessed Lie series. This 90-minute read is a perfect read for your lunch break or kids’ football practice.
