Interview – Olivia Shaw-Reel

Tell me about your latest book.

Stuck Wit’chu, my 26th novel, is about a couple, Keith and Marlow Richmond, who’s been married for over a decade, but life has sort of drawn them apart. They’re on their way to separation and nothing can fix it. Their oldest children pick up on the tension around the house and decide to plan a vacation by booking the trip with their father’s credit card.
The book is set in real-time so there’s COVID going on and chaos in the world as we know it, but Keith and Marlow decide to suck up their problems and go anyway and figure it’s best to do one last family trip before the inevitable happens.
However, the trip allows them to rediscover all the things that they’ve lost along the way.

Why did you choose to become a Christian Fiction Author?
God called and anointed me to write! I knew at 7 what I wanted to do, and I’ve been doing it since. As a Christian writer specifically, it was only natural as I am a woman of faith first. Each book is my pulpit and I don’t take it lightly.

What inspired you to write it?
Situations and moments inspire me! I could be washing the dishes, cooking, traveling, singing in church, or wherever, and an idea will pop into my mind! This is true for ALL of my novels. Once the plot comes together, I literally run with the ideas until a book is complete.

What is your writing process? (Do you write at a certain time, a certain place, use a notebook first?)
While I love writing in the wee hours of the morning, I write whenever the inspiration and ideas hit. I’m thankful for the “Notes” feature on my phone so I can quickly jot down what comes to mind.
Eventually, I’ll start scribbling chapters in a notebook or I’ll pull out my laptop and knock out a few paragraphs there. I have no specific process other than needing semi-silence and zero interruptions, especially when I’m really into a scene. I just let everything flow, edit heavily, let it flow some more, edit again…and repeat.

What is the best part of being an author?
I enjoy first expressing all the creative thoughts in my mind. As an introvert, writing has always been my voice. (By the way: when authors say there are voices in our heads, we mean it!) I also love ministering to others through my work; that is the most rewarding part. If I can help change just one life or lead somebody to Christ through my faith-based novels, then I’ve done my job.

Who are some of your favorite authors?
Kimberla Lawson Roby, Sherron Elise, DL White, Joy Massenburge… too many to name! I’m a fan of anybody who understands and appreciates the craft, really.

What book(s) are you most excited to read next?
Anything by authors Kimberla Lawson Roby or DL White; their books are incredibly entertaining to me.

Tell me something about you as a person. (Likes, hobbies, family anything you would like readers to know.)
I’m a huge fan of reading yet never have the time. I’m a total homebody who enjoys cheesy Lifetime and Hallmark movies, dancing, and spending time with family every chance I get. I also sing in my church choir though I’m super shy.

What is next? (events, projects)
I will be re-releasing all 25 of my novels, as well as introducing new characters and storylines all 2021! Pray for me as I venture into the film industry. Also, come out to the 2021 Christian Book Lover’s Retreat. God willing, I’ll be there with my novels and open arms to meet you!

Do you have anything you would like to add?
I’m thankful for those who support me and other authors, and especially indie authors. It takes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to put out the work we do, sometimes without any backing, support or guidance, even. So to know our work inspires people or is favorited by readers—that means everything! Thank you!!
