3 Reasons Why You Should (and Should Not)Join an eBook Subscription

To subscribe or not to subscribe, that is the true question.  Hi, my name is She Nell. I am an author, blogger, independent publisher, and Literacy teacher.  Are ebook subscriptions worth their cost? We all have different reading habits and budgets, so let’s take a look at the pros and cons of ebook subscriptions. We will discuss the plans in general, so if you are considering a Kobo or Kindle Unlimited subscription, this article will apply to all plans. Just in time for you to catch the Amazon Week deals if you choose.

3 Pros to Having an eBook Subscription Plan

  1. Unlimited reading- hello book lovers. Subscription plans allow you to read an unlimited number of books.
  2. Reading library books is possible- Although most books may be available through your plan, there may be some that do not give you access. Those books are often available through apps like Libby or whichever system your public library uses for free.
  3. The subscription pays for itself if you are an avid reader.- The average ebook is around 3.99 If you read 5 books a month, you would have spent $15.99, which is more than the average cost for a subscription.

3 Cons to Having eBook Subscription Plans

  1. The books aren’t yours. If you are a collector, then you will be disappointed to know that your ebook library is subject to change. Books can be deleted and formats changed.
  1. It’s a bill! If you are in your reading era and financial freedom journey, every dollar matters. Do you really need another subscription? If you are trying to heal your wallet, then adding another expense won’t help the bleeding stop.
  2. Plans are not interchangeable.  If you are a multi-device user will need a plan with each brand to read across your devices. For example, if you love your Kindle but also enjoy your Kobo, that may mean two subscription plans.

How to Benefit From Your Cons

We aren’t doom and gloom around here, we are light and salt, so here are 3 ways to turn your cons into pros.

  1. The books aren’t yours, but the reading experience was yours. You can create a reading journal entry or purchase the physical copies of the books you enjoyed and feel you must have.
  2. Is it a bill or is expense? Bills are monthly occurrences that we hate. Expenses are necessities that we put in our budget. Calculate the amount of money you spend on books. Look at the cost over three months. Your subscription may be saving you money.
  3. Your plans aren’t interchangeable, but one could be all you need. Having two devices may work in your favor.
